Whether you are an author, a student, an editor, professional or a copywriter, this article is bound to help you decide whether ProWritingAid is worth it or not. So buckle up and let's dive straight into it.

What is Prowritingaid?

ProWritingAid is one of the leading online proofreading tools used by authors, writers, bloggers and business writers to check for grammar and edit style in their works. It is a software that eases writers' editing work by eliminating errors, editing grammar and punctuation mistakes and optimizing word choice faster. It is useful in writing any form of content or topic.

The editing software is available as a web browser for both Mac and Windows. It is also supported by Microsoft word, Scrivener and Google Docs.

ProWritingAid editing software does not offer dedicated apps for Android or iOS. At least not at the time of writing this ProWritingAid review 2020.

As much as it can be used by all types of writers, ProWritingAid is particularly common among fiction writers. It is even rumored that Stephen King is a fan. I'll explain later on in this article why the fondness with fiction.

What does prowritingaid do?

ProWritingAid helps improve the readability of your work by checking on both your grammar and spelling. Here's how the web desktop app works

prowritingaid grammar check

  • Start the ProWritingAid app
  • Upload your document(it could either be Word, text files, Markdown, Scrivener or more)
  • Let the app scan your document
  • It then opens up the text from your uploaded file together with an editing tool panel
  • The tool then underlines/highlights your errors. Spelling mistakes are underlined in red. Yellow is for incorrect sentence structure, style issues and poor writing eg use of passive voice. Grammar mistakes are underlined in blue.
  • Hovering over undeinrd words prompts a pop-up with suggestions on how best to fix the underlined issue

Some of the other issues pointed out by the online editor include

  • Cliches
  • Overall readability
  • Overused words
  • Sentence length
  • Sticky sentences
  • Duplicated words and phrases
  • Vague and abstract words
  • Wrong tense

All these issues are dealt with through detailed reports and suggestions that will not only improve them, but also improve your craft in writing.

And that's not all.

ProWritingAid compared your work against the best writers in your genre. This means that it's more than just an ordinary grammar checker, it could be your mentor.

The reports given on your work appear at the top of the editing toolbar. Every writer is entitled to 22 reports, 25 in the premium version.

Most of these other grammar checker tools do not provide this much information on a writer's works so this is definitely a plus for ProWritingAid.

Is your content safe?

Of course as a writer, one of the biggest threats you might face is plagiarism. The one thing a writer wants to know before using a grammar checker tool is if their work is safe from plagiarism

Well, ProWritingAid is safe.

It does not store any text once you are done proofreading your work. This means that no other person can get their hands on it for there are no records. Both the free and premium versions of the tool are safe to use.

How I used prowritingaid

This is my typical workflow when using grammar checker tools on my articles:

  1. Put down the text on IA Writer or Scrivener
  2. Copy and paste that written draft into my grammar checker and editing tool
  3. Let it scan for errors
  4. Fix the errors directly in the first draft(IA Writer or Scrivener)
  5. Send to an editor for publishing

When I used ProWritingAid, I had to change my workflow and this in turn saved me a lot of time. There was no copying or pasting with ProWritingAid, simply opened the file directly via the desktop app.

I majorly use Markdown when writing, mostly using IA Writer. This is because it simplifies the process of adding HTML to my articles.

I was therefore very pleased to find out that I could import Markdown documents directly onto ProWritingAid. The uploaded Markdown file is however not converted into a publishable format. Neither does the tool enable a live preview.

As I had mentioned earlier, ProWritingAid does not store any of your articles once it's done analyzing them. This means you cannot have a library of your articles like in other grammar checker tools.

Prowritingaid impressions

After using the tool, I felt like it would also be the perfect tool for nonfiction writers and novelists, being a nonfiction writer myself. Here's why.

Other premium grammar checkers put a restriction on the number of words that can be scanned at once. This means that if you have an entire novel, you'll have to scan it chapter by chapter. This may take up a lot of time. Good news is that ProWritingAid allows you to check your book, no matter the size or number of words, all at once.

what does prowritingaid

It also helps with readability by checking for cliches, use of vague and abstract words, use of passive voice, writing style, word choice among several other features.

It is important to note that the desktop app of this tool only works when and where there is internet connectivity.

Checking my book using prowritingaid (detailed description)

I checked my book using ProWritingAid in two ways.

Number 1

I uploaded a 45,000+ Word document of my book's draft to ProWritingAid. Using another grammar checker tool would have meant uploading the book chapter by chapter so that's a point for ProWritingAid.

The app took a couple of minutes to scan the entire document and when it was done it identified 250 mistakes that needed fixing. This also came with a report together with suggestions on how to fix these mistakes.

As much as ProWritingAid does not have restrictions on the number of words to scan, the tool prompted me to scan sections of my book rather than the full of manuscript. When I tried this, the scanning process went a lot faster than when I scanned the whole book. Guess this means the longer the text, the longer the time spent scanning.

Number 2

I uploaded my new book's Scrivener project onto the desktop app. The scanning process wasn't as slow as before. Like before, the tool identified my mistakes and provided useful suggestions that would make my manuscript better.

The feature that intrigued me the most was my ability to save changes directly onto my Scrivener project. I must admit I enjoyed method number 2 than method number 1. I also intend to regularly use ProWritingAid on my Scrivener projects.

How does prowritingaid improve your writing skills?

Below are some of the different ways ProWritingAid can help improve your writing skills.

  1. There is an All Repeats report which you can use to find overused words then replace them. This broadens your vocabulary skill.
  2. The cliches report helps you polish your sentences by checking on your dialogue.
  3. The in-built dictionary and thesaurus can help to immensely improve on your word choice. The tool helps you to pick out the most appropriate word that'll help convey your intended meaning or message. This is through its comprehensive analysis of your writing.
  4. If you have a problem differentiating between US and UK English then ProWritingAid has got you covered. You can use the spelling consistency feature to check when you alternate the two.
  5. It makes use of the Flesch Reading Score. The world's most popular English readability test.
  6. The tool provides real-time grammar and style checking as you edit. This is useful because you'll instantly know whether your corrections are making the article better or worse.
  7. Sticky sentences report. Sticky sentences are sentences that take up a lot of time, use a lot of words before the main point is given it addressed. These unnecessary words are known as glue words and ProWritingAid helps flush them out.

ProWritingAid offers a lot of helpf insights. It is up to you to decide which one's you want to accept and which one's you'd rather ignore. It also offers a helpful guide to help you make up your mind on given reports and identified errors.

The plagiarism checker feature is most appealing to students and nonfiction writers. You must however buy credits in order to enjoy this tool.

This tool will help writers who work on academic essays. It is also very appealing for writers who want to make sure that their content isn't being used by someone else elsewhere.

It is also a great way to find citations if perhaps you'd forgotten the source.

Prowritingaid integrations

Some of the dedicated online writing tools that can be used with ProWritingAid include Google Docs, Word Processor and Scrivener.

ProWritingAid with Chrome and Google Docs

ProWritingAid provides a browser plugin for Chrome. After installation, the plugin begins checking your work on the go. This can be used to scan various types of texts eg emails, social media posts, blog posts and many more. Scanning Google documents however requires a separate add on.

When trying it out, the Google Docs add on gave me a bit of problems, despite the fact that I was a premium subscriber.

ProWritingAid with Scrivener

Scrivener is very popular among indie authors who are working on novels. Checking Scrivener documents with ProWritingAid is very easy.

You first need to upload your Scrivener document onto ProWritingAid. Once opened the tools presents your file as folders (considering it is a hugely worded document). With this information provided, navigate through every folder and fix your errors on the go.

Good thing about Scrivener documents is that the changes you make are saved directly onto that document. No back and forth.

ProWritingAid can be a real time saver when it comes to proofreading Scrivener projects.

ProWritingAid with Microsoft Word

ProWritingAid scans Microsoft Word documents with the help of an add on. Unfortunately this add on is only available on Windows. However, during my research I found an alternative on how to scan Microsoft Word documents. Easy, simply upload your documents directly onto the tool's desktop app and it scans it for errors and mistakes. These mistakes can be fixed on the app then later the changes are saved in the Word document.

Prowritingaid vs other grammar checker tools

In comparison to the in-built grammar checker in Google Docs or Word, ProWritingAid finds more errors and mistakes.

It is also more accurate and very easy to use than other premium grammar checker tools.

Grammarly presents information on errors in tiny boxes that are found to the right of your writing. ProWritingAid on the other hand only underlines the errors, which you have to click on in order to get more information. This process can be very tedious.

Unlike other premium grammar checkers, ProWritingAid does not provide a mobile app. This is a turn off for writers who enjoy crafting on their tablets and iPads.

The extensive reports provided by ProWritingAid are unlike those from other grammar checker tools. The reports are very detailed and help you in self-editing your work.
