Are you looking for a writing job that pays well? Are you thinking of working online?

Nowadays it is very easy to make hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month through expressing and working on your creative ideas online.

In this article I will highlight over 15 websites that offer writing jobs for all types of writers.

Let's get started:

Problogger

Problogger

There are other advertisers who prefer to know the writer's rates first before deciding on payment. It is up to you as a writer to know and understand your worth. What are you bringing to the table? In order to determine your price you should consider the effort you are going to input and the time you will need to get the job done.

UPwork

Payment

Because nearly all the job listings on this site are freelance, payment may vary from one job to another. In your proposal, a potential worker should include their payment bid.

Upwork also collects charges from its workers, depending on the type of account one holds. The first $500 is charged at 20% which drops to 5% once you exceed $10,000. This complicated biding system may make it very hard for novice writers to get a substantial payment at the beginning. That's not all, a new writer will have to endure low-paying rates until they have built themselves a reputable profile.

Fortunately, there are expert skill tests for freelancers that can be taken at any time. Once you pass the test, displaying your score on your profile will show clients your expertise therefore increasing your work opportunities.

As I was snooping around the website, I found one listing that offered up to $1000 per month and another that offered $40 per hour.

Medium

I don't focus that much on this app. Program partners receive monthly payment for writing stories. I've received more or less than a hundred dollars per month of writing. More committed writers receive up to five-figure payments monthly.

Much of Medium's content is placed behind a paywall for premium readers. Writers who are members of the partner program receive a portion of this fee. The amount a writer receives from that fee depends on the rating they get on a post.

Types of writing jobs include:

  • Storywriting
  • Blogging
  • Fiction writing
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Personal development
  • Practical advice

Payment

Here are the pay rates as per early 2020:

How much are writers paid?

As I mentioned countless times in this article, payment rates may vary depending on what you write, its length, how much you spend writing it and where you sell your work.

In America, writers and editors may earn up to $98840 annually according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

I know a couple of editors and all of them said that amount seems too high.

I did more research and found 5 more sources that gave a detailed data report on how much writers are really paid for their work. These rates vary depending on location, industry and time of year.

Glassdoor

According to them, freelance online writers earn on average €48252 annually in the US. This figure could be more if you specialized on a certain writing skill. For example content writing or copywriting.

PayScale

Inclusive of commissions and bonuses, a freelance writer earns $21.59 per hour according to PayScale. Averagely the total amount rounds up to around $40148 depending on both the industry and writer's experience.

Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA)

EFA provided salary data according to subcategories.

  • Fiction: $40-$50 per hour, 20-25 cents per word
  • Ghostwriting: $50-$60 per hour, 26-50 cents per word
  • Grants/Proposals/Sales/PR: $50-$60 per hour, 30-95 cents per word
  • Journalism: $40-$50 per hour, 26-50 cents per word
  • Medical/Health Care: $60-$70 per hour, 80-95 cents per word
  • No specified: $40-$100 per hour, 20 cents -$2 per word
  • Technical/Trade: $50-$60 per hour, 45-55 cents per word

The Irish Times

The Irish Times says many novice authors find it hard to sell more than 100 books in a year. They added that their earnings may be as low as $500 within a single year, if not less.

Much of this information related to American writers and authors.

Earning good money from a book depends on one's advertising skills and of course the contents within the book.

Writers selling their books on websites only earn a cut of the total sales price. Amazon pays its writers the following way:

  • Book sold for $2.98 or less; 35% of the selling price
  • Books sold for $2.99 to $9.99; up to 70% of the selling price

If a writer were to sell like a thousand copied of a book sold at $9.99 then they can earn up to $7000 a year. Self-publishing your books makes this very achievable.

The Society of Authors

The Society of Authors conducted a survey in 2015 inclusive of 317 writers. The findings of the survey showed that on average, British authors earn £12,500 or $15,000 per year. The minimum wage for a full-time job in the UK is £18,000. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation's minimum income on the other hand is set to be £17,100.

My takeaway?

Online Writing Industry pay rates are on the low, and depend too much on specialism.

Writers should consider turning their works into either a book or a course they can sell at higher prices. Alternatively, consider providing additional services such as consulting, SEO or coaching.

How to maximize your writing income

The best way to maximize your writing income is by investing in your writing education.

The moment you start getting monthly earnings through writing, set aside a small amount every month. In the beginning the money might only be enough to buy books on writing. As time advanced and you start earning more from your writings, you can go ahead and take online writing courses. These are bound to help you improve your craft and skills.

When I first started taking online courses, I felt like I was being scammed. It seemed like to much money to give to a random person on the internet. This random internet person later on turned out to be my mentor and I have learnt a lot from him regarding online businesses over the years.

Your chances of becoming a successful writer also increase by diversifying your writing income.

For example, the most popular and successful nonfiction writers and authors diversify their income streams through additional services such as teaching courses or offering consultation services.

Online writing jobs and associated skills are more now than ever. You just need to figure out your ideal niche and determine your audience or readers. All you need to know is where to look and you're off to a good start.
